Safety Week

This week the whole school has been focusing on safety. We have looked at rail safety, bike safety, road safety, fire safety and e-safety; as well as having a visit from the fire brigade and northern rail.

The e-cadets taught us about staying safe online; not using our full name, not giving out personal details; and using a picture instead of our own photo.

When the fire brigade came, they talked through the equipment on the fire engine; dressed up some children in their safety clothes; and even tested the siren!

Here we are practising our road and bike safety knowledge. Have a look at the safety display board to see some of our instructions for crossing the road!

We had our first trip to the pantomime this week and the children had a great time singing and dancing to all the songs.

This half term our topic will focus around the work of Dutch artist, Vincent Van Gogh. An artist from The Lowry came to school to teach us how to draw portraits; these can be seen on display in the Key Stage 1 Hall.

Here we are drawing sunflowers, similar to the piece of work by Vincent himself titled, Sunflowers. 🌻

We have spent this week looking at fractions; the classroom was turned into a pizza parlour so we could order pizzas, make orders and investigate pizza as a whole, half and quarter.

At the end of the week we had a pizza as a treat!

Florence Nightingale

Our topic this half term is based around Florence Nightingale; we were lucky enough to get a visit this week and learn about her life. She told us about her nicknames and her schooling with a Governess, we even got some lessons with the Governess – piano, painting, sitting and standing properly and sewing!

Florence then took us on a journey to Crimea where we pretended to be nurses and injured soldiers.

The Big Bad Wolf

The Big Bad Wolf visited our classroom overnight this week and dropped his diary; we had a sneak peak before Miss Champ spilled a drink on it!

The children helped recreate the diary by taking a page each and writing what happened each day. We left the diary out for the wolf to collect this weekend; some pages of our diary can be seen on our working wall in the classroom.

We have been up to lots of exciting things including: recognising and ordering numbers to 20; English learning around the story The Three Little Pigs; independent learning; our first Spanish lesson; exploring Florence Nightingale; and our class bear Jeffrey 🐻 (named by the children) went home with our first star of the week!
